Contact Us TodayA New Era for Vinson Hall
For nearly six decades, Vinson Hall has been a cornerstone of retirement living in the McLean community. We’ve been a place where service, dignity, and connection are valued every day. Rooted in a mission of care and respect, Vinson Hall has long been more than a residence, we’ve built a community of shared values, lasting friendships, and a deep sense of belonging.
Since opening our doors, we have served thousands of residents with a commitment to excellence. What began as an independent living community has evolved into a full Life Plan Community, offering a complete continuum of care. Today, our campus includes Arleigh Burke Pavilion for assisted living and skilled nursing, The Sylvestery for memory care, and additional independent living residences in Willow Oak and Heritage Hall.
Ideally located near cultural landmarks, fine dining, and our nation’s capital, Vinson Hall offers easy access to the best of the region. At the same time, our 23-acre campus provides a peaceful retreat, thoughtfully designed to feel welcoming, connected, and set apart from the outside world.
Vinson Hall is entering its next chapter with Project RISE, a forward-looking expansion designed to support the way people want to live today. Construction is planned to begin in 2028, with the first new residences anticipated to open in 2030. This evolution reflects a commitment to growth and progress while remaining grounded in the traditions and values that have guided Vinson Hall for nearly six decades.
What Does rise Mean?
RISE represents a bold reimagining of Vinson Hall: a thoughtfully planned expansion that will add 126 new independent living residences, enhance community spaces, and create the vibrant gathering places that define exceptional retirement living.

RISE Expansion Questions and Answers
Project RISE (Redevelop, Inspire, Strengthen, Evolve) is Vinson Hall's comprehensive expansion and modernization initiative. We're adding 126 new independent living residences, expanding community spaces, and creating the amenities and gathering places that define exceptional retirement living. It's the most significant transformation in our nearly 60-year history.
We have carefully phased the project to minimize disruption while maintaining full operations. Construction will be managed with respect for our residents’ quality of life, with clear communication and thoughtful planning throughout each phase.
The new layouts will feature modern designs and more spacious floor plans. Detailed floor plans are currently under development and are expected to be released in late 2026.
Pricing & Fees
Yes. A wider selection of apartment units, plans and pricing will be offered once construction is completed. Entrance and monthly service fees for Willow Oak, Vinson Hall and the new apartments will vary, and the costs to reside in each part of campus will be independently evaluated and determined.
RISE will offer 80% refundable contracts as well as Declining Balance contracts. With the 80% refundable option, the vast majority of your entrance fee is returned to you or your estate, offering financial security and peace of mind. Our contracts are designed to protect your investment while ensuring you have access to the full continuum of care throughout your residency.
Campus & Lifestyle
For the convenience of our residents and staff, all buildings on the main campus will be attached. The Sylvestery will be accessible by walking or riding across the street.
Yes. Each of the new residential buildings will have a lobby gathering area or “living room” located adjacent to the building entrance. These spaces are currently being planned to comfortably accommodate 20 to 30 residents at a time for a variety of uses, ranging from enjoying a cup of coffee, to mingling with fellow residents, to more informal group gatherings like ice cream socials. These spaces will be located near mail and package pickup.
The new Fitness Center, including cardio facilities, will be located on the renovated first floor of the Kathy Martin Community Building.
Absolutely! Every effort will be made to maintain — or enhance — our campus’s park-like setting. This project improves existing walking trails to allow for forest bathing, and provides a continuous walking loop around the campus. We are also working with an arborist to assess and mitigate the project’s impact to our trees. Plans are being made to plant trees and vegetation before construction commences so that these plantings will already be established by the time the project is finished. Finally, the design will also include carbon-reducing features and technology to reduce the project’s carbon footprint where it is cost effective. Our goal is to incorporate environmental concepts into the design, “bringing the outside in” wherever possible.
Dining
Project RISE will include up to four new modern and inviting dining venues, all located in Chesterbrook Commons. Once construction is complete at Chesterbrook Commons, these new restaurants will replace our current restaurants. Planning for these venues was conducted with the internationally renowned culinary design firm SCOPOS, with assistance from Sodexo, our dining services manager. The plan reflects the latest ideas from new and developed senior retirement communities.
Residents of the new RISE buildings will be required to participate in the dining program via a hospitality fee included in a resident’s regular monthly service fee. The exact amount of the hospitality fee has not yet been determined — but it will cover the cost of dining, day spa and salon charges, activity and transportation fees to local events, and other expenses. We’ll keep residents apprised of developments as we complete the plan details.
We are still working on the details of the new hospitality plan, including accommodations for residents with extended absences from the community, and will provide an update once it is completed.
Healthcare Services
No. After Project RISE, the capacity for memory care in The Sylvestery will remain the same. The Long-Term Care (LTC) unit on the second floor (400 wing) of Arleigh Burke Pavilion will be renovated to accommodate the short-term rehabilitation beds of the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) that are moving from the first floor of the Kathy Martin Community Building to Arleigh Burke. So while the total number of LTC and SNF nursing beds in Arleigh Burke will be reduced, it is anticipated that the number will be adequate to accommodate the needs of our current and future contract-holders in independent living. The renovated bedrooms in Arleigh Burke’s 400 wing will also all be larger, private, and equipped with a private bathroom and shower. In the longer term, after the completion of RISE, we may consider an expansion or rebuild of our assisted living, long-term care nursing and memory care units.
Yes. A Registered Nurse is always on campus at Arleigh Burke Pavilion 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year round. In addition, a licensed medical professional, be it a Certified Nursing Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse, is also currently available at the Health & Wellness Clinic in Heritage Hall on a 24/7 basis. Project RISE includes plans to reposition Heritage Hall’s Health & Wellness Clinic as part of a larger, integrated health and wellness service program, and in doing so, we are currently evaluating its location, services and hours. However, we anticipate continued availability of healthcare coverage on a 24/7 basis on campus through Arleigh Burke Pavilion.
Campus Access & Parking
You will still be able to enter campus from either Kirby Road or Old Dominion Drive. Additional campus access is currently in the planning stages.
While you’ll still be able to enter the campus from either Kirby Road or Old Dominion Drive, you will not be able to drive straight through campus.
We are currently working diligently with a transportation consultant, Fairfax County and the Virginia Department of Transportation, to improve the existing crosswalk and traffic light on Old Dominion Drive by adding a new road where the path known as “Alpine Way” is currently located. Our goal is to improve traffic access into campus and ensure resident safety at the crosswalk that will connect Vinson Hall to Chesterbrook Shopping Center. This new road, if approved, will help to minimize construction traffic on campus and preserve trees and green space valued by residents and the greater community.
All vehicle parking will be located underneath the new RISE independent living buildings at the garage level. One space will be assigned per apartment, and only if the resident is an active driver. Electrical service to the parking garage will conform to Fairfax County requirements and may include a limited number of EV charging stations available to residents and staff at their own cost. Currently, we do not anticipate an electrical outlet at each parking space in the garage.
Plans for resident storage are still being determined. It is anticipated that resident storage will be available on each floor of the new independent living buildings, or on the garage level of the building.
Our Community
Yes. Our organization’s nonprofit status will remain the same. We’ll continue to be a not-for-profit community, supported by the Navy Marine Coast Guard Residence Foundation (NMCGRF), which is a 501(c)(3) organization.
Our organization’s board and governance structure will remain the same, with the same members actively supporting the residents and programs of all Vinson Hall residences.
